Seems some good birds are showing up her.  Can you talk about birding in this area?  It seems the only way to get there is by Ferry. I am curious if someone could tell more.

madcat 26/10/2010 23:50

You may also take the footpath ("Tung O ancient trail" )from Tung Chung to get there :  Yat Tung Estate, Tung Chung >> Hau Wong Temple >> San Shek village  >> Sha lo wan village ( and further down to Tai O if you want)

ajohn 27/10/2010 14:22

The whole footpath between Tung Chung and Tai O can be very productive for birds, and I would recommend this walk to those with time/energy. Sha Lo Wan is one of the best sites along the path.

Long old walk though when it's not productive!

ajohn 27/10/2010 15:37

Hmmm. It depends on your definition of 'not productive'. Personally I enjoy it just for the walk, even when there isn't much bird activity.

It's more fun than a quiet day on Po Toi  35510b1213e1445

True, it is a pleasant stroll. This time last year I had some good birds in and around San Tau village in particular.

And what is that thing at the end of your message supposed to be doing, eh john?

wgeoff 28/10/2010 15:43

Never had a quiet day on Po Toi.

What's it like?

Peregrine Falcon
Black-capped Kingfisher
Striated Heron
Pacific Reef Egret
Little Ringed Plover
Common Buzzard
Common Blackbird
Yellow-breasted Bunting
Asian Brown Flycatcher
Common Kingfisher
White-throated Kingfisher
Daurian Redstart
Black-winged Kite (20 at least)

Are you sure about the record of Black-winged Kite? 20 would be an incredible number for this species, which is normally not seen in numbers greater than 1 or 2.

I was in the area on Sunday (31/10) and good birds included:
Radde's Warbler
Bull-headed Shrike
Mountain Tailorbird (San Shek Wan)
Asian Stubtail Warbler x2 (San Shek Wan)
Ashy Drongo (San Tau)
Chestnut Bunting x10+ (along N Lantau path, most around San Tau)
Common Buzzard x5

The flock of Black-winged Kite gliding high in the sky in Tai O at dusk. Kind of Falcon wing shape with pure black and white seen from below.

Could they have been Amur Falcons?
