Warbler? Please help to ID!

It was saw on the way from Sha Lo Wan to Tung Chung on 24.11.2010.

The size is roughly the same as a Oriental Magpie Rohin. In fact, a Oriental Magpie Rohin came that caused it ran away.
Is it a Japanese Bush Warbler? Please help to ID!

I would say Brownish-flanked Bush Warbler.

I'd agree that it's a Manchurian/Japanese Bush Warbler - for the rufous crown and large size. 3551smile445

The breast and throat appear rather buffy rather than white and the eyeline appears rather weak--both not suggestive of Manchurian Bush Warbler.  

Some Brownish-flanked Bush Warblers can appear rather reddish as this photo shows.

Yet if it was that large that would be wrong for Brownish-flanked Bush Warbler.

I agree with Manchurian (Japanese) Bush Warbler, based on the large size, strong rufous forecrown, obvious pale (whitish) supercilium and (in my opinion) relatively strong eye-stripe (although it seems Brendan disagrees!). Basically, it just seems too bright and contrasting for Brown-flanked.

Usually I expect the eye-stripe to be more blackish on Manchurian Bush Warbler but it can be brownish too. When I first thought Brownish-flanked Bush Warbler, I didn't read the description of the size. I do agree that size would eliminate Brownish-flanked Bush Warbler something that is clear in the field but we can't judge in photos.

The taxonomy and ID of Bush Warblers seem to be very complicated - I haven't yet looked at the recent Helm guide and I'm not sure I can afford to! However, I don't think Brownish-flanked would ever show such a rufous crown as in the photo that began this thread (although Viney says the crown can be tinged russet). Brownish-flanked are your typical "little brown jobs" (apart from juveniles which can be quite yellowish on the underparts), takking (not churring) and skulking in the undergrowth.

Also it's possible that the Brownish-flanked Bush Warbler from the Oriental Bird Images database has been mis-identified. It doesn't look like a typical Brownish-flanked to me at all.

I did not hear it's call.

Besides, I agree with ajohn that the eye-stripe is relatively stronge especially viewing via telescope in the field.
