Lam Tsuen, Spring 2011
I flushed a crake out of a shallow ditch beside the path in the lower area of Pak Tin Kong. The centre of the map here is where I flushed it from. I've been back down several times with no luck to look for it but there is so much vegetation and very little open water to stake out.
I had just flushed a White-breasted Waterhen and about ten metres on flushed a much smaller crake. I mainly saw it in flight- my overall impression was of a overall brown crake, heavily streaked back- lots of white flecks on the back- flecked/streaked rather than barred. It lifted from the drain and dropped into vegetation about five metres away so I didn't get long to look at it. The best fit I could find was Baillon's Crake.
I'm off the next couple of days so will continue to look for it.

I have a feeling Lam Tsuen is rather under watched this Spring. I'm just back from a the UK and I think Mike is still away. Just been out for a late morning walk and there is a Dollarbird at Lung A Pai.

Lesser Cuckoo heard
This evening at about 19:50 I heard a Lesser Cuckoo calling 4 or 5 times over the main car park in Ping Long Village.
The call on Xeno Canto of a bird recorded in Taiwan is just right:

I went out to look for the bird but was not successful, but this is a South China breeder so its possible it may stay in the area.
Cheers
