Phuket - Please Help

I will be leaving for a family X'mas holiday in Phuket for 10 days .. i hear that due to deforestation etc .. things are quite what they once were.

I was wondering if someone here might have been there lately and can give me some advise as to where the hotspots might be ..

thanks in advance ..

I birded there around July 2007, basically around a nature park there, but forgot the name. Not very impressive. The trail was not well maintained.

Try typing some key words like south thai birdwatch and do some research, e.g. this website

You may have a chance to visit Khao Sok NP if you have time.

You may go to the area around the Laguna Resort at Laypang beach. The ponds inside the resort area were nice when I went there in 2010, and there were still some open county (the feeling of buffalo fields in HK) without large-scale development. Not sure the recent situation though. Also for the area driving on your own is recommended.

Nevertheless, the Laguna Resort and nearby hotels are nice if you find Patong too busy (given you have the budget).

Khao Sok is certainly on the agenda but it is quite a long drive up north .. I have read many great reviews about the place ...

Thanks

We are staying in a friend's villa in the Laguna area beside the banyan tree resort so the area you mentioned is a must ... I was also told the golf courses in the area can also be interesting, ... Thanks

Purple swamphen. Quite easy to see this bird at the golf course.

The national park should be Khao Phra Thaeo National Park.

Good luck

although i was reluctant to leave the island as we are staying with friends and did not want to seem too pre-occupied by the birds, .. our host have suggested khao sok national park .. we will be there for a couple of days and then dropping by Ton Pariwat on the way back which was recommended by Ike of www.phuketbirdwatching.com ..

thanks for the advise and will report back during our stay .. cheers
