I believe this is a ([i]lucionensi[/i]s) Brown Shrike - a species which we get regularly in Hong Kong. Grey-backed Shrike only occurs in northern Thailand in winter and its range does not extend as far south as Phuket.

hi david, .. the brown shrike i have seen in HK .. please see the attached ..
i confess that i have not looked up the geographical coverage of the grey-backed shrike, however from the photographs .. they certainly look very different to me.

Depends on age & race of the birds in question. The Phuket bird is an adult. Compare with a similar adult [i]lucionensis[/i] at Lai Chi Kok in May:
