West of N. Xinjiang, China 4/5-2013
Just completed a 10-day birding trip to the west of N. Xinjiang beginning late April. We started out from Wulumuqi & travelled to the border city of Tacheng(塔城) which is bordering with Kazakhstan. During the trip, more than 10 species of raptors were seen and here are some of them :
Booted Eagle 靴隼鵰
We were lucky enough to get a clear view of it. Apparantly it didn't want to give up its prey when we tried to approach it; it therefore just brought its prey to some distance away from where we stood.

Eurasian Sparrowhawk 雀鷹
We met this bird in a park at Wulumuqi, When we spotted it from the footpath, it simply ignored us. Later we found that it locked a target on the slope under. After 10 mins., we heard a sharp continuous calling from the bird; it got a prey and carried it up to a tree branch. Finally, it even carried its prey from the forest to the top of a lamp post for a show 3551a50445
