I think this is a juv Brahminy Kite. If so, it would be the first record since 1990. What time was it seen and where at Mai Po?

I wonder if this is a Brahminy Kite.  It just doesn't feel quite right, in that it looks rather bulky, and large-headed and large-billed.  It also seems very contrasting above, with an obvious pale rump.

To me it looks more like a juvenile Booted Eagle.

Are the any photos of this bird flying directly towards the photographer?

Jonathmartinez 22/09/2014 12:24

I guess that Booted Eagle would show feathered tarsus, and this bird clearly don't in one of the picture.
But agree that head and bill looks really massive for BK.

lpaul 22/09/2014 13:09

On my screen it is not at all clear if the tarsus is feathered or not.

Then buy a new screen :-)

More seriously, the tarsus to me looks very weak for Booted Eagle, and the rear tarsus on the left bottom picture won't show the same thickness on its all lenght if would be feathered, it would be something more conical with some feathers taken the wind, except if it has just been to beautician...

here the only pic of Booted eagle with exposed tarsus in flight (take-of I know) I found :

same for Brahminy Kite :

Yes, I see what you mean.  I think this must be a Brahminy Kite.  However, I hadn't quite appreciated how similar the two could be in terms of plumage...

Jonathmartinez 22/09/2014 15:33

I fully agree...I had the same impression after you raised this possibility this morning... even overall structure, like the rounded tail, bulky inner wings, overall shape...very disturbing...
Especially as probably given the actual distibution of Brahminy Kite, one or the other are having almost the similar degrees of probability to turn up in HK...
This one could maybe have been blown up from the Phillipines by recent Typhoons...

Many thanks to all of you again3551smile445
