Generally quiet around the Reserve, but still 2 pairs of Black-winged Stilt with chicks on [i]gei wai[/i] #16/17 and up to 6 Greater Painted Snipe outside Hide 3 on most late afternoons.
Four White-fronted Kingfisher were around on 24 June and there's been an outbreak of Black Drongos.

This Besra has rushed into the Education Center in an afternoon when it was trying to hunt a mouse. It has knock on the wall and ceiling for several times until it finally come to rest, hanging itself up-side-down on the window frame. It recovered after 5 minutes and was able to find its way out.

Autumn migration started
27 July 2007, Mai Po NR
1 Asian Dowitcher,
2 Eastern Curlews,
and in total of over 1,000 other shorebirds.
Also, 12 Black-faced Spoonbills are still present. Despite that number dropped from 15 birds in June, this group is still the largest number of BFS over-summering in Hong Kong.

22 spp of waders at Mai Po (without going to the Boardwalk) this morning, plus Yellow Bittern 12 BFSpoonbills and 2 Striated Heron.
Also a Yellow-billed Grosbeak near the warden's hut.
There is a stint pond along the road that runs parallel to the casuarinas.
This had RN and Long-toed Stint, KP, LRP Greater Sand and a Swintail Snipe.
There were also lots of juvenile Azure-winged Magpies about.

Much of the same today with the waders with a good mix on the scrape at high tide.
Also I saw the Grosbeak feeding in a fruiting tree behind the first pond you come to as you leave the Panda Shop heading to the reserve along the road the runs alongside the boundary fence.
An Asian Paradise Flycatcher was feeding in the trees behind the portaloos.
In addition, a Budgerigar was also in these trees around the egretry and a Fischer's Lovebird was seen along the access road. These two must be real long distance migrants!

If you plan to visit Mai Po over the coming week or so, its worth checking out the cleared area inside Pond #17b. The freshly exposed muddy floor is attracting good numbers of Yellow Wagtails, Wood and Common Sandpipers and a few Snipe. It's also potentially a good site for Pipits when they start to arrive.
