塱原秋2008 Long Valley Autumn 2008

Let me start a new thread for autumn 08 of Long Valley.

Weather is still hot.
1 (or maybe 2) Yellow-breasted Bunting female
6 Common Teal
1 Intermediate Egret (rare in Long Valley)

25/10/08

  Scoured most of Long Valley for a couple of hours this afternoon.  Birders/photographers were the most abundant species.  Otherwise:

- Highlight for me was easily a juvenile Purple Heron that I flushed towards the end of my walk.  My understanding is that most Purple Herons migrate through the Mai Po/Deep Bay area, so I was pleasantly surprised to see it here.
- Three species of Pipit now: Red-throated are abundant, a handful of Richard's are around, and had my first Olive-backed of the season today.
- Other birds of note: 1 Blue Magpie, 1 Oriental Reed Warbler, and 2 Yellow-breasted Bunting.

Dear Paul

if adult male besra should have reddish eyes and this bird the breast pattern doesn't look like an adult.look from the uppertail, i still think this is a 1st winter japanese sparrowhawk. can you tell more about this ??

Common Teal

On 2 Nov, at late evening, I saw flocks of birds moving into the tall-grass field for the night.  That include Munias, Bulbuls, and Buntings.  By night fall, Painted Snipe come out of the hiding place.  I also saw ducks (Common Teal) landing on the pond in front of me.  Last of all, there is a Nightjar (Savanna) flying around, and then sit on a pole for a long time.  Night-time bird watching could be dangerous.  Don't go if you have not prepared properly.

Black-headed Bunting @ Long Valley

A trip this afternoon from 2:30 - 4:30 produced over 40 species

The best of these was an immature/female [b]Black headed Bunting[/b] in the area between the central path from Yin Kong and the drainage channel.  It had an exciting afternoon - a cat tried to catch it and a Long tailed Shrike tried three times. As a rsut it was moving around a bit, but I had good views fro at least 15 minutes.

There was also a female Citrine Wagtail along with macronyx and taivana Yellow Wagtails, and my first ocularis White Wagtail  of the autumn and several Red-throated Pipits in the watercress beds to the north of the path.
