2009年2 月9日上午10時培訓班在油麻地梁顯利社區中心開鑼。 這次參加的學員共有27人，課程內容包括市區雀鳥、塱原雀鳥、水鳥及林鳥，講師由資深觀鳥會會員及職員擔任，並由紅耳鵯成員組成培訓小組帶領實習。
開課當日，羅偉仁先生和蔡松柏先生簡單地介紹「香港觀鳥會」、「紅耳鵯俱樂部」和開辦培訓班的目的，並描述了香港鳥類的情況及觀鳥所需的基礎常識。

第一個單元「市區雀鳥」的實習在2009年2月12日「九龍公園」進行。 經實習後，學員們已掌握了使用望遠鏡的基礎方法和對常見的市區鳥類有了初步認識。
