SABAH, BORNEO, MALAYSIA TRIP 2009

Travel to Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia, for birding on end of July to early August.
We began our journey from Danum Valley to Sukau (Kinabatangan River) then Mount Kinabalu.
These 3 places provided us different ecosystems and opportunities to find the endemic species of Borneo.

Here to share some of our photos taken during our enjoyable trip. :  )

You are never well prepared against this blood-sucking monster! This Leech has just fed on one of us!! "-(

Hi Koel,
We stay in the Accommodation Guest House at Danum Valley.  However, if you have time (3 months ahead), the Borneo Rainforest Lodge is the best place to stay. We were just to rush and the Lodge was full !  Anyhow, this place is very good for Pittas and we manage to see 3 species of Pitta in one same trail. Amazing !

Hi James 10,
If you are going to Mt. Kinabalu, the Headquater area and the small car park near the lodges are very good at dawn and dusk. Also, you need to try some of the trails , like the Silau Silau Trail are excellent for Trogons and Partridge.  Of course, you need to be patience and lots of luck. Wish you have a pleasant trip : )

We only managed a total of 146 species (including 14 endemics & 7 were heard), and 12 Mammals during our travel. Not bad at all, as we wanted our holiday as relax as possible...that's our excuse!

We had a friend in Malaysia so he helped us to arrange everything.
You have to book early if you want to stay in Danum Valley as there is a limited vacancy and permit is needed to stay inside. If you hire a bird-guide, he will arrange all this before hand.  Sukau and Mt Kinabalu are famous tourist attractions so I'm sure you can book through internet easily.

cheers

Peter & Michelle a great series of shots. I must agree with you that Sabah is a wonderful place for a trip. I went to Sandakan (little Hong Kong) primarily to attend the Dawn Service on Anzac Day (25th April)at the Sandakan War memorial. At 12noon on getting back to the hotel (Sabah Hotel) the travel agency there arranged for a car to take me to Sukua, 2 hours away, I then had nearly 5 hours cruising the rivers in a motorised canoe. It was off season and besides the boatman/guide I was the only person in the canoe and it was an absolutely tremendous experience. I stayed on the river until it was pitch dark and the guide suggested we head back because he had seen pgymy elephants swimming in the river the day before.

Here are a couple of my shots from the canoe

Peter,

What lenses & Tripod/monopod did you take on the trip.

Thanks

Bob

wleepoin 27/08/2009 23:50

Bob,
I think 400mm/500mm lens with tripod is good enough for Sabah, cos most of the birds are at a pleasing distance.  But tripod is a must, as most of our birds are under the canopy. Lighting is usually insufficient.

Body: Canon MK 2N
Lens: 800mm f5.6 & 400mm f5.6
Monopod: Manfrotto 685B
Tripod head: RRS Hi-capacity monohead with B2-Prp II
Tripod: GITZO-GT1530

Hope this helps

Cheers
Peter
