Interesting bird, but a rather dark and large-billed Grey Heron I think.

The back on the flanks and white on the joint of the wing would rule out other potentially exciting options.

Since bird guides do not mention about variation of Grey Heron, I am wondering if anyone has seen similar "dark morph" of Grey Heron in the past. Many thanks.

The first sight of it for me is purple heron, but the lower part is not like purple heron

Hydrid? Some herons occasionally do this silly thing. Very interesting.

But I think it may be a sick bird or with some genetic problem about the feather colour of its head.

Thank fatchun. Also thank you and your friend for directing me to the site of Verditer Flycatcher while you saw your 1st Red-throated Flycatcher. Btw, which model of DC you are using? It performs quite good.

Thank Wcaptain. I am also thinking about the possibility of hybrid. Do you have any information on which Heron could hybrid with Grey Heron?

After an internet search, I found that Grey Heron can hybrid with purple heron, great white egret and little egret.
