[Hong Kong]

On 29-6-2017, Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden (KFBG) released 3 Little Egrets rescued from the Tai Po Egretry into the wild at Yuen Chau Tsai, Tai Po. The Society was also invited to witness this special moment. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden for providing the professional skills and intensive care to rescue and rehabilitate the injured birds, such that they can recover and have the ability to survive in the wild.

Two of them were received after the LCSD tree trimming incident (in the blue boxes in the video). They are at least 2 months old and suffered from air sac rupture, but are now fully recovered after intensive care and rehabilitation. They can now fly and self-feed, and were ringed with yellow tags (no.: HA36 and HA37). We hope they can find a new home after they are back in the wild. If you happened to find a bird with a ring/tag, please contact us.

The Society will continue to monitor the condition of the egretry and follow-up the tree trimming incident with relevant Government departments. We hope similar incidents will not happen again in the future. AFCD said that they are now collecting information and undergoing investigation on the incident, while there is no futher reply or explanation from the LCSD.
According to the information provided by KFBG to the Society, by 28 June 2017, their Animal Animal Rescue Centre received a total of 29 birds from the Tai Po Market egretry for rescue and rehabilitation. The birds were presented with a wide range of conditions including broken bones, dehydration, feather damage and tissue bruising. Some of them were suffering from hunger as a result of being separated from their caring parents. Among them, 8 are still under intensive care while 21 have died.
