[Oversea] Kaikoura seabirds, New Zealand

Kaikoura seabirds, New Zealand

19,20 and 21 November 2008
At sea on three different "Ocean Wings" boat trips.

1D MKIIn + 400mm 5.6

Salvin's Albatross  (Thalassarche salvini)

Wandering Albatross (Diomedea antipodensis)

Cape Petrel (Daption capense)  NZ race australe

southern race capense

Grey-faced Petrel (Pterodroma gouldi)

Fairy Prion (Pachyptila turtur)

Northern Giant Petrel (Macronectes halli)

Many of these birds congregate at commercial fishing boats for scraps of fish guts thrown over the side...

Fly to Christchurch (New Zealand, South Island), drive to Kaikoura (famous for whale and dolphin watching). Tours daily at 06:00, 09:00 and 13:00 if at least three passengers book. Costs $80 NZ for about three hours.

Brings back many wonderful memories.

The number of large (Wandering/Royal) albatrosses (there appear to be 13 in your shot) looks exceptional - exceptionally wonderful certainly!

John and Jemi,

Thanks for the photos. Just remind me about that great experience. The albatrosses were so close that you can shake hands with them....

Thanks,

Captain
