I'm interested on the Black-capped Night Heron. What are they doing? Gathering along pond side?

Gary, I am also interested in those night heron. In the past, Tsing Yi Park has not such large group of night herons. From the last year's summer, I could saw three to five individuals of adult flying around the coast and lived there. I saw them almost every time I walked along the coast at night and they stood on the boats or on the trees nearby.

This year, I feel there is a sudden increase of no. of night herons around the areas of the coast (Tsing Yi Park is near the coast). Recently, when I went to the TY park, I could see several (~half of total were juv. and the total no. of night herons was arround 12-15) juveniles of night herons standing on the man-made rocks, along the edge of fish ponds with lily (as well as Common King.), on the trees, as well as flying between ponds in TY park and the coast. Perhaps I could say this is just like the "mini-fish pond" of kwoloon park.

I also noticed the increase in numbers of Night Heron at Tsing Yi Park and a very big decline in the numbers at Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter. The typhoon shelter use to have 30+ birds but lately I have only seen several.

The main reason in the decline at the Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter is all the construction work for main infrastructure projects. These projects will take years to complete so maybe the Night Herons will go forever. There used to be a lot of Little Egrets roosting at the typhoon shelter but their numbers are down to just a couple

21-9-2010 Heavy Rain

I had a brief walk along the Rambler Channel started from Maritime Square to the end of Tsing Yi Promenade.

1 Adult and 2 juvenile Common Sandpipers
1 Common Kingfisher
3 Little Egrets
1 Great Egret
1 Male Blue Rock Thrush (Pandoo)

The Blue rock thrush flew to and clawed onto the vertical surface of the bridge covered with large amount of oysters and barnicles, and it started pecking for food. Very interesting.

The same position of the Blue Rock Thrush was occupied by a White-breasted Kingfisher.

The arctic warbler was found today again, but no pale legged warbler and flycatcher.

There is a large patch of trees and shrubs at the back of TYP. In fact, this is a slope planting with high variety of tree and shrubs.
And the environment is quite good for forest birds to hide. Hope I have more time to stay there for observation.
