Post pictures of a Grey Plover, Swintail Snipe, and Red Turtle Dove.  If anyone can say whether it looks like Pintail or Swinhoe's, please do. I have read that the legs extend longer on the Pintail Snipe but this is not definitive.

It seems that I incorrectly IDed the Pacific Golden Plovers on 18 Sep.  I had IDed the bird in flight as a Grey Plover because I had thought the birds had black axilliaries and in the photo it also looked like the bird had black axillaries but it is clear they are Pacific Golden Plovers from the more recent photos.

I agree that Brendan's photo looks like the axilliaries are dark, suggesting Grey Plover. The upperpart pattern rules out Grey though - the wingbar is not strong/contrasting enough, and there is no white rump. It shows the danger of relying on a single feature for ID. Pacific Golden Plover is, of course, more likely in this habitat.

But just to be quite clear, there is no Grey Plover record here - as ajohn has pointed out the original photo is of Pacific Golden Plover.

There remains just the one record for LV therefore.

a nice evening from 5:00 to 6:30 produced the following birds:

Yellow Bittern - 1
Pacific Golden Plover - 1
Swintail Snipe 3
Fantail Snipe - 2
Himalayan Swiftlet (with greyish rump and lower belly) a 20 second fly-by at the eastern end of LV
Dusky Warbler - 1
Oriental Reed Warbler - 2
Silky Starling - 4
Chinese Starling - 4
Daurian Starling - 1 male
Chestnut-cheeked Starling - 1 male

Both of the last two were in with the same flock as the Chinese Starlings and only showed for a couple of minutes

Tempted by Mike's photos I took a walk around LV this morning.  The starlings were still present but dispersed into two or three flocks and were very mobile, mostly over towards the river.  I didn't pick up on either Chestnut-cheeked or Daurian - althought there was one darker bird in one flock.

Other birds:

Stonechat x1 (first of the year for me)
Oriental Reed Warbler x1
Grey-headed Lapwing x1

Thank you all of you for the great records!
I was in LV on Friday afternoon to evening. However, couldn't find any Daurian or Chestnut-cheeked Starling but a flock of around 70 Black-collared Starling!!!
Also, 2 Pacific Golden Plover were seen that afternoon.
Hope to see more starlings in LV.

1 Peregrine Falcon--the chain attached to its tarsus makes me think it's not a wild bird
1 Besra--John Allcock can correct me if I am wrong (based on shape but mesial stripe is not very strong)

3 Richard's Pipit
1 Asian Brown Flycatcher
4 Dusky Warbler
4 Yellow-breasted Bunting (never really landed but keep circling around the rice)

Mike K can probably add more detail. There was a possible immature Citrine Wagtail in amongst the Yellow Wagtails - distinctly pale, strong wing bars.  
Nice big flock of munias about too.  Very birdy- lots of small stuff flitting overhead.

A couple of pix of a rather buff-toned Citrine Wagtail (at least Dylan and I think it is!)

The features looked good -

• Supercilium extending around the dark ear coverts with a pale centre, and meeting on the forecrown
• Pale wing bars and tertial fringes
• White vent
• no hint of green on the grey back/mantle

I was initially concerned about how buff this bird was, but this is not unusual in late-moulting birds according to Johnsson.

I'd welcome any comments.

Also seems to have the dark area along the upper edge of the super, which is supposed to be a feature.

All in all it's not just buffy, but also very lacking in contrast, isn't it - a product of the buffiness I guess.

Didn't pay much attention to buntings but i thought i picked up a female Chestnut Bunting.
Also some flocks (4~30+ each) of ducks, at least some wigeons flying overhead.

A Chestnut-eared Bunting in a flock of munias on paddy field.
A Cinnamon Bittern was found killed. I believe this bittern was the one seen on 31 Oct.

After a quick trip to get the Bean Geese at Mai Po went to Long valley. Nice weather today

1 Amur Falcon (high flyover; not sure if it is on the Long valley list but probably won't be allowed because I think generally flyovers are not counted)
1 Eurasian Skylark (heard)
1 Swintail Snipe
4 Chestnut-eared Buntings
~25 Yellow-breasted Buntings

Brendan, are you sure there are ~25 Yellow-breasted Bunting in LV? Since this would be the highest record this year, I'd like to confirm the counting.

It might not be right to attribute the presence of flyovers to HKBWS management in all cases, but flyovers should definitely be counted!

Since flyovers are counted on the HK list there is no reason not to count them at Long Valley.

Long Valley has some wonderful birds that are only flyover records. These include:

Dalmatian Pelican
Bean Goose (of however many taxa the Records Committee finally agree on)
Common Swift
Bonelli's Eagle
Black Vulture
Carrion Crow
Blue-tailed Bee-eater

Plus various species actively hunt over LV, including Peregrine Hobby, House Swift, Barn Swallow, Pale Martin, Asian House Martin, and in such instances there is a direct connection to the habitat through the food created either directly or indirectly at the site.

For your reference mike, The 5 blue-tailed Bee-eaters seen on 7 Nov seems didn't simply fly-over - they used trees near River Beas for a little rest, and probably some hunting when they circulate around.

With regard to the Yellow-breasted Buntings, I was birding in the area with the waist-high grass for quite some time.  At one point there was a group of 10 Yellow-Breasted Buntings landed in the grass.  Then a half an hour later there was a group of 8 there.  The whole time I was standing there (1.5 hour) about every 3 minutes a small group of 1-3 YB Buntings would flyover head.  Of course, these Buntings were flying ever which way so it was hard to know which ones I had counted already. So I think 12 would be a very conservative count but realistically I would estimate there was around 25.

Good news!  The only Blue-tailed Bee-eaters I've seen at LV were flyovers  - in 1994!
