Reference Geoff Carey's request for details on cage bird records.

Here is a list of the cage birds I have seen over the last two years in a small Aberdeen park - not a market, just a place where cage bird owners gather to show off their birds

These lists are very interesting. Note that nearly all the species are wild-caught. Only the canary and the Superb Starling are likely to be true cagebirds.

As GeoffW says, it would be very useful for members to collect such data. Do you have a park or market near you where caged birds are displayed? If so, consider visiting it 2-3 times a month, noting the date and making a list of the species that you see each time, with an approximate number. Do it quietly and carefully so as not to invite questions.

At the end of the year pls submit the data to me and/or the Society for us to review. It would provide a good basis for addressing the issue of wild birds being caught for this trade. One wonders how many birds die for each wild bird that ends up on display in a cage?

Certain species are bred in captivity and are very suitable as cagebirds. There is scope for people to pursue this hobby without impacting wild bird populations.

Hi Kwan,

If it is possible, see whether the no of prayer birds (munias, tree sparrows and white eyes) can be counted. A HKU student and KFBG did it in 2005 and 2008/09, respectively. The long term trend may indirectly indicate the activities of bird release in HK.

Just the no of cage is ok. It is known that each cage usually contains about 40 birds.

Birds are similar to those as yesterday, but lots of unID juvenile birds were seen today.

still a lot of Juveniles/chicks were seen today, I believe most of them were caught on nest. There were also three fujian niltava which similar to the Kings Park's one today, all are having full black bill, pale vent, robin-like shpae, lacking well-defined shoulder patch and extensive blue crown. I believe these features fit an adult male Fujian but not a Rufous-bellied. Photos are attached below but I do not think they are useful.

The bird you've labelled White-browed Fulvetta is a Chestnut-capped Babbler Timalia pileata

Not sure about the "Zoothera" type - could be Chestnut-capped.
