[Ducks] Smew - 白秋沙鴨 ( female )

Dave latest message

Dear Dave

Your words are loud and clear. But could the good news come from you?

Hopefully when I stop my rants and gibberish comments you or somebody else will find the Smew.

Thanks

For those who are not 'in the loop' and have not yet heard, the smew was apparently again present at Mai Po on Pond 4 this morning (I have not yet had the opportunity to look for it).

Given the controversy previously caused by the delay I am surprised that the information is not yet on here, or on Birdline.

Thanks for posting the record John.

The bird was not on Birdline for the simple reason that Richard and I were out in the field until at least 1230, and neither the Birdline machine nor the BBS can be updated remotely (at least not but technology dinosaurs like us!).

All birders whose numbers we have were called. Since over 100 people had a chance to see the bird within an hour of its discovery and some within 15 minutes, the situation is very different from the previous discovery.

The bird was found on Pond 4 (near the Rocky Outcrop) at the north end of Mai Po at about 0945 and present until at least 1110, but had flown off twice. There is some thought that that this might be a different bird from the previous one. Hopefully the photos will tell the story.

Smew and its info

Dear all

I learned about the bird from personal calls. In today's case even non-members saw it long before me.
It is understandable that Richard's machine was not the old one, probably a system supplied by
PCCW which cannot be remotely controlled.

It's Mike and Richard's speedy spread of news that made so many winners today. A big 'thank you' for you both.

Sorry if you misunderstood Mike. I was not suggesting you had done anything wrong. I was surprised the info wasn't available because:
1. I thought Birdline could be accessed and updated remotely, so was surprised Richard had not done so. Evidently this is not possible.
2. I was surprised no-one who you had contacted (thanks for the call btw!) had been able to post anything, either before leaving or remotely.

After all, not everyone is necessarily in the same loop of friends!

No worries John

My email was sent to inform (many people don't know how old the BirdLine technology is) and cut off another round of unhelpful emails, which seems to have worked pretty well.

There should be plenty of Smew around in England with weather like you're having there!

Cheers

The Smew was still on Pond #4 today (at 1300) actively preening and associating with a small group of Tufted Duck.

Andy,

Thank you for your excellent photos shared in the forum.  Even I have not seen it in the Nature(up to date), I feel it as if in the Nature from watching your photos.
