PS: Did you ever consider using a Swarovski DCA to adapt the camera to the scope, instead of using the bracket?

I think DCA is the best adapter for swarovski but not easy to keep balance. More, DCA is not suitable for a heavy machine such as a medium size DV or even 30D. The lens port is easy to break that I have this experience for my previous DV (I move the scope with DV attached).

50 1.8 is a very common lens and cheap. If $ is not a concern, 50 1.4 is much sharpen!!

does this setup only work with a wide angle eyepiece?  i've briefly tried such setup with my nikon scope + 20-60x eyepiece and 50mm on DSLR but couldn't quite focus.

It works with all eye pieces in my experience and only works for manual focus. Actually, it's true that not easy to focus and the view of depth is thin.

Could you please advise me what are the settings in your camera when you take picture with EOS30D and the STS80HD?

I have an adaptor which can directly connect my EOS350D with STS80D. When I use the 'auto' function to take picture, the picture is over exposure like this:

You are right. In my experience, the camera always over exposure if you use the auto mode. I use Av with -2/3 ev to -1 1/3ev which depends on the situation. Keeping in high shutter speed with over 1/320 to get a sharp image. Sometimes, I also use the mirror lock function to reduce the vibration of the shutter that I can use a lower shutter speed. But you have better use raw to save the photo and it is able to retrieve the data even the photos are a little bit over exposure.
I am still finding the best setting for it and always fail in digiscope with DSLR. My success rate is below 1/20. But I take over 400 photos each times.
If using the F30, the success rate is higher and up to 1/5 but no raw data can be saved and the resolution is lower...
In a open area with sunshine, DSLR is better. In a open area with cloudy, F30 is better. Birds under shadow, forget the digiscoping.

That is the 1st time I used my DLSR with STS80HD. I will adjust the settings (such as force close the flash) and retry it later
