Penfold Park closes for Olympic construction
3 July 2006
The Hong Kong Jockey Club announced today that Penfold Park at Sha Tin would be closed from the end of July to next April for the construction of training facilities for the 2008 Olympic equestrian events.
John Ridley, Head of Racing Operations & Equestrian of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, said the move was to ensure public safety and minimise the impact on the egretary in Penfold Park.
He said that construction would start in August for a cross country training track, a bridle trail, four sand training arenas and associated drainage and irrigation works.
"There will be a large number of construction vehicles entering and leaving Penfold Park," Mr Ridley explained. "The closure is to ensure public safety. In addition, there is an egretary in the park. On advice from the Environmental Protection Department, the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department and the Hong Kong Bird Watching Society, we need to finish the construction by the end of February to reduce the impact on the birds' habitat during the breeding season between March and August."
Penfold Park will also close in summer 2007 for the test events and during the Olympic and Paralympic events themselves in 2008.
As venue provider for the 2008 Olympic equestrian events, the Hong Kong Jockey Club will return the park back for use by the public after the Paralympic Games by the end of 2008.
