Habitat Management Work at Gei Wai #16/17

Habitat Management Work at Gei Wai #16/17

In preparation for the coming migratory and wintering season, the habitat management team of Mai Po Nature Reserve is preparing an open, non-vegetative shallow water habitat for those soon-to-be arrived waterbirds. The team is conducting the following works at Gei Wai #16/17, the largest high-tide roosting site within the reserve:

1. Submerge bird island vegetation by raising the gei wai water level as high as possible for three months (July to September) to minimize the growth and spreading of vegetation. In the meantime, alternative high-tide roosting sites such as Gei Wai #11 and #21 will be maintained at a lower level, ensuring roosting habitats are still available for waterbirds.
2. The water level will be adjusted to the optimal winter level in October.

In order to make the gei wai more “friendly”, WWF HK wishes to adopt informal names for each gei wai/pond or location inside the reserve based upon their history and usage or the wildlife they support. For example, gei wai #16/17 is often referred to as “the scrape”,
