Po Toi Summer 2008

Po Toi Summer 2008

As usual, summer has been very quiet on Po Toi.

In June, the last Cattle Egrets, Pond Herons and a single Schrenck's and Cinnamon Bittern left early in the month. Yellow Bittern and Striated Heron stayed until the end of the month but have not been seen since then. 2 probable Sooty Terns from the ferry on 19th June were the best records.

July has seen a few odd birds turning up, as in the previous years. An adult Dollarbird on 3rd July may be a first summer record for Hong Kong. A juvenile White-throated Kingfisher on 15th July, a juvenile Common Kingfisher on 29th July and a juvenile Chestnut Bulbul also on 29th July are all examples of juvenile dispersal from somewhere else. Finally, a Hoopoe also on 29th July is a first ever summer record for Po Toi.

I will be away now from Hong Kong until early September, missing the first weeks of autumn migration. The opportunity to visit the Arctic and see Polar Bears is too much to miss. At least it will be a change in temperature from the last few days in Hong Kong.

No interesting bird seen on the island except one very shy female/juvenile Yellow-rumped flycatcher.
Very hot day!
