WWF Floating Hide - Broken Barrier

WWF Floating Hide - Broken Barrier

New Floating Bird Hide : 31 July 2008

Last weekend's high wind speeds during the freak weather event smashed over the barrier leading to the entrance of the new floating hide. Our staff will try and fix this over the coming weeks during low tide periods.

In the meantime, in order to minimise disturbance to waterbirds and also to people trying to watch birds from the hide, please can visitors do their best to appropriately time their arrival/exit at the hide.

Thank you for your cooperation,

可唔可以係圍欄未修理好前,每日於鐵絲網門外提示幾點鐘前要進入新鳥屋,遲左就唔好再入去?

Before the barrier could be fixed, whether it is feasible to daily post a notice outside the entrance of the closed area? It could remind people not to enter the new bird hide after a stated time.

As the waders are expected to congregate in front of the hide at tide level 1.7m-2.0m approximately, they would be easily disturbed if there are people walking along the “exposed” boardwalk. We recommend that visitors could arrive/leave the hide before the tide reach 1.6m and after it reaches 2.1m.

Base on the predicted tide table from the HK Observatory, there are good daytime tide for bird watching in the hide from 1-7 Aug and from 11-14 Aug. We would highly recommend birdwatchers to visit the Observatory website to check the tide before coming to Mai Po as the actual tide often varies from the predicted ones. Thus, please understand that it is quite hard to state the exact time for entering the hide.

The barrier is expected to be fixed within one or two weeks. We apologise for any inconvenient that may cause and thank you for your kind co-operation and patience.
