Summer gei wai drain down 2011夏季基圍乾塘

Summer gei wai drain down 2011夏季基圍乾塘

Over the coming months, WWF will drain down many of the gei wai inside the Mai Po Nature Reserve. This is done to benefit waterbirds in Deep Bay whom congregate at the gei wai as the water-level is gradually lowered. Proposed drain down dates are:

本會將於未來數個月,把米埔自然保護區內多個基圍放乾,目的是方便後海灣的水鳥在水位逐漸被調低的基圍聚集覓食。請瀏覽以下冬季基圍放塘的建議時間:

Some additional information about the above management practice:

Spring/summer drain-down of the Mai Po gei wai is a fairly new management practice at the Reserve. Its inclusion into the annual management cycle follows successful field trials in 2009 which recorded day counts of over 1,000 waterbirds feeding in slowly draining gei wai. The draining provides extra food to locally breeding herons and egrets in early summer, then to their fledged young in late summer.

This spring/summer 9 gei wai will be drained down and aside from the direct benefit to waterbirds, it offers a fantastic opportunity to watch and photograph waterbirds congregating together as they feast on small fish, shrimp and larvae.
