Shutter safety improvement at Tower Hide

WWF Hong Kong always aims to provide a safe environment for visitors at Mai Po Nature Reserve. We review visitor safety from time to time and upgrade the facilities to ensure visitor safety. A recent safety review identified the risk that a falling shutter on the hides could trap fingers and cause injury. In response to this, in June 2013 we have upgraded all shutters in Tower Hide to incorporate a spring hinge and a pair of pressurized stoppers to buffer the force. As well as reducing the risk of injury, these shutters should also reduce the noise produced by closing shutters, minimizing disturbance to birds. Care is still required to prevent the risk of injury when closing shutters, but it is hoped that the new system will minimize the risk of accidents occurring.

The system in Tower Hide is provided as a trial. We would like to collect feedback before deciding whether to apply the system to other bird watching hides. If you would like to express your opinion or to get further information, please contact WWF Mai Po Office by 2471-6212.
