unusual large bird near 'Governor's Walk'

Sat 21st April, 11:00 am.  'Governor's Walk' on the Peak: we saw three very large birds perched in the lower branches of trees - but were not able to photograph them. One's first thought would be a thrush of some sort, but they appeared somewhat pheasant-shaped - the tails being too long for thrushes . They were of a rather uniform light brown colour. Black colouring around the eyes, and white colouring to the face and breast.
We are very familiar with greater necklaced laughing thrushes and they did not seem to fit the bill: too large, too long, and without the streaky necklace effect.

Could they be escapees from an aviary? Deliberately released pheasants? An unusual kind of thrush? They are surely too large to have gone unnoticed.
