Could you let us know where in Tai Po this bird was seen?
Thanks. Author: lmichael Time: 30/12/2009 11:59
I am not convinced that this is not just a female Verditer.
Apparently large bill is a pro- Pale Blue feature (but size is difficult to judge at this angle), but two features which fit female Verditer better are obviously barred under tail coverts and the paler chin, throat and cheek.

You may be right, Mike L, and I may have made the strategic error of only referring to MacKinnon, for a verification that Pale Blue can look like this.
But I've got to say it doesn't look right for Verditer to me, either structurally, or in terms of tone (obviously potentially not represented "accurately" by photography).
The illustration of Pale Blue on Plate 80 in MacKinnon does indeed look like this, and other texts such as Rasmussen (BoSAsia) refer to a "scaly vent". And the greyer throat and underparts look right and are borne out by other texts (eg Robson).
It really would be nice to know where we might go to look for it.

Confusing this, having two parallel threads - I replied under the Verditer thread, please go there if interested (but summary is I still think, but am not sure, that this is Verditer).
