I've just come back from a too brief trip to Los Angeles and Scottsdale. I normally go to Scottsdale every year in winter to visit friends and find it a wonderful place for water birds in all the ponds around the city as well as the water treatment works to the SE at Gilbert (about 20 mins drive ). In LA I only visited Venice Beach (10 mins from the airport ) on several mornings and evenings. The highlight was a raft of Surf Scooters off the pier which included a Red-breasted Merganiser and a Loon. The highlights in Scottsdale were Black-fronted and Fulvous Whistling Ducks.
I had recently acquired a new Swarovski 45x eyepiece for my scope which I used to get images of the male and female American kestrel but I didn't see as many hawks on this trip as I usually do.
Bird photography is much easier in the USA than HK as the birds are much more used to people around the city parks and ponds. Neil
