I made visits of Japan in last few weeks for watching some seabirds. I got the ferry to outlying islands in Japan and watched the birds on the way. Below are bird (and marine mammal) records of these trips.
13 March 2010, Tomakomai (Hokkaido) to Oarai (Honshu), watching time: 0610h to 1200h and 1240h to 1735h
Black-throated Diver 2, Diver sp. 5, Black-footed Albatross 3, Streaked Shearwater 1099, Red-necked Phalarope 24, Black-legged Kittiwake 670, Black-tailed Gull 1242, Common Gull 7, Glaucous Gull 1, Vega Gull 71, Slaty-backed Gull 56, Parasitic Jaeger 4, Common Murre 6, Ancient Murrelet 128, Japanese Murrelet 4, Unidentified Murrelet 215, Crested Auklet 3, Crested/Whiskered Auklet 917, Unidentified Auk 4, Unidentified Murrelet/Puffin 11, Rhinoceros Auklet 5 and Fur Seal 9.
14 March 2010, Tokyo to Ogasawara (Bonin) Island, 1150h to 1800h
17 March 2010, Chichijima to Hahajima, Ogasawara (Bonin Island), 0730h to 0930h
Black-footed Albatross 5, Wedge-tailed Shearwater 113, Brown Booby 7 and Humpback Whale 5.
On Hahajima:
Chinese Spotbill 2, Northern Pintail 1, Pacific Golden Plover 7, Whimbrel 1, Ruddy Turnstone 1, Little Egret 1, Bonin Island Honeyeater 20.
17 March 2010, Hahajima to Chichijima, 1430h to 1630h
Black-footed Albatross 2, Bonin Petrel 3, Wedge-tailed Shearwater 381, Brown Booby 8 and Humpback Whale 7.
18 March 2010, Ogasawara (Bonin) Island to Tokyo, 1410h to 1800h
Forgive if I call you thus. I certainly do not mean 'Familarity breeds contempt' here.
Your lastest birdtrip, though known to me for some time, is not known for what birds.
Overall it must have been a nice trip, for those who want to further their seabird experience and
skills.For me it must be most challenging but also most rewarding.
How about seasickness. A big ferry must be like birding on a slow-moving car, right?
What else did you see, any eye-catching girls, I mean Japanese ladies, not 'Nan-mode's.
Birds and our opposite sex members. Don't let them over-intoxicate us! I hope readers do
sense a tint of humour here!
