Dear Fai Jai and others

Very good that you posted two nice pics here but is the second one a Tawny Fish owl?

Could I also ask if someone who helped orgainize the trip tell the forum including me how did
you go and most important any key contacts/arrangements you had made before you went?

Important data including where you stay, in the company of privately hired cars/guides or officals
of any nature reserve, etc.

Thanks for sharing in the spirit of birding comradeship.

Your reply either in English or Chinese are welcome.

Dear LCHUNFAI,

I'm really interesting on Tawny fish owl information, could you please give us more details about your observation : where did the bird stand, near a stream, what altitude, what the quality of the forest, did you hear the bird at night, what the size of the stream near....how did you find the bird....
Since i'm searching for this bird in my local patch in Hunan, this could help me a lot to focus in some area.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Jonathan

Dear Jonathan,

The photos I took are almost the same

The owl was found by our driver , he said there was a Buzzard near a stream.
At first , we thought that was an Eagle Owl ( it was sleeping on a big tree ), however , after checking a field guide in an inn where we stayed , we concluded that it was an Tawny Fish Owl
We did not stay overnight there , so we couldn't see  / hear the bird again.
Let me attach two photos taken by my mobile. I hope these might help you.

I agree that this is a Tawny Fish Owl, and not Eurasian Eagle Owl or Brown Fish Owl. Apart from size, eye colour, underbody streaking & presence of ear tufts, key TFO features are black bill, bright orange tone to the whole underbody, lack of cross-barring on the belly, lack of black border to facial disc and unfeathered legs & feet (feet clearly visible on second photo).

Dear Fai Jai,

Whooo! I'm really envious. Thanks for all your details and pictures, that will give me good idea on where i have to search. The trees where the bird was perched does'nt look very old. I allready find some good area for Tawny fish owl in Hunan (i do believe they are good, but there is very few information about Tawny in China)and my plane is to spend time at night during the time i do expect bird are more active on vocalisation. This is my 2011 goal: find Tawny fish owl in Hunan:-)

What about the altitude where was the bird?

Thanks and best regards

Dear Richard ,
Thanks for your detailed explaniation , it helps a lot

Dear Jonathan,
The altitude is above 1700m. At night , I do expect it stands on stone and wait for a fish ^^
Hope you can find one in Hunan !!

Cheers,
Fai Jai

*once again , thanks for viewing

Great photos. It looks like you had a good trip, and I am very envious. Such good views of the Tawny Fish Owl as well!

One point - I think you either posted the wrong photo or the wrong name, because your Spangled Drongo shows a picture of Speckled Wood Pigeons!

thanks a lot ~
the name is corrected

Looks like a wonderful trip - Tawny Fish Owl is very hard to see in China, so a great find by your driver, and wonderful pix!

You were fortunate to see Golden Pheasant in the open like this - many people have to work very hard for this species.

I see why you like Crested Kingfishers  - the last shot is excellent.

Any pix of the golden monkeys?

Cheers

Mike ,
there is a spot where some conservators feed them every day for an hour
We could find around 20-30 monkeys there. After feeding time , they climb up a hill and all disappeared
I forget the exact location ( I was sleeping in the car ..ha ) , but it seems near Tai Pak Shan

They are very cute !

Cheers
Fai Jai ~
