Many birdwatchers and photographers will return to Mai Po in the coming weeks to observe southward migration during daytime high tides.
Whilst at the Reserve you will notice three large-scale habitat restoration / enhancement projects in progress; Gei wai #16/17, Pond #8a and Gei wai #18. For further information on these projects refer to the previous posting HERE.
Please note these works will continue until the end of October. This also now applies to the Pond #8a project because enhancement is more substantial than first planned.
Once again we apologise if these works cause inconvenience to or detract in any way from your visit to Mai Po. As many Mai Po regulars know, April to October is the only time we can do these works due to compliance with government guidelines and avoidance of disturbance to wintering birds.
We hope you understand the conservation reasons for and potential conservation gains of this work. If any BWS member would like to discuss these projects further please feel free to contact me.

Some updates:
- The project to de-silt Gei wai #18 will finish on Friday 29th October. The network of visitor paths and hides will be back to normal as well.
- Enhancement work in Pond #8a (in front of the Tower Hide) will also finish this week. The Pond will be flooded up on the weekend, then flushed several times early next week to reduce water acidity.
- The work near Gei wai #16/17 is also coming to an end. The contractor successfully created two new freshwater ponds and extended the high-tide roost. The new areas will be operational next week after being flushed through.
There are now many grasses (mostly Barn-yard Grass 稗) in Pond #8a and Gei wai #16/17 which have established over the summer. It is our intention to leave these as fodder for waterbirds, particularly duck.
Once again, thank you for your patience.
