I think I am right in saying that all of the recorded Turdus thrushes in HK will not have pale tips to the coverts in adult plumage except Chinese Thrush.(Note this is not true for Zootheras or Rock Thrushes.)From your fab picture , the greater coverts appear pale tipped in keeping with your suggestion that this is a first winter bird.

Thanks Ric.... much appreciated.
Hasn't been back since..... but hoping.
So far over the last week have photographed 8 different Thrushes in my garden.. although on Tuesday think I had a 'fall-out" and have no idea how many landed in my pond that day. Feeling quite honoured. Pale Thrush Japanese Thrush (Male & Female) Grey-backed Thrush (Male & Female) Blue-whistling Thrush Daurian Redstart (Female) Red-flanked Bluetail (Female) Blackbirds Rufous-tailed Robin
All the best, Guy
