Breeding birds in Long Valley: need help for record 記錄塱原繁殖雀鳥
Since the breeding season began, we have started conducting breeding bird survey in Long Valley in order to record bird species that breeds in Long Valley as well as those which utilize the site during breeding. Due to limited resources, we cannot conduct survey very frequently. To fill up the data gap, if bird watchers and photographers found any bird with breeding behaviour (see the list below) in Long Valley, please mark down the bird species, number of birds seen, breeding behaviour(s) observed and took a photo if possible and then email to Miss Vicky Yeung (yvicky@hkbws.org.hk).
Please note that to avoid negative impact to breeding birds, please DO NOT approach breeding birds and juveniles. If nest or eggs found, please leave immediately. Take a photo on the nest location in a far distance (about the distance of a farmland). If adult bird is observed visiting the nest, please mark down the species. In addition, please DO NOT disclose the location of any bird nest. All photos are welcome to post to the forum after the breeding season.
Breeding Behaviour (base on the Hong Kong Breeding Bird Survey 1993-1996 [Pg 44-89 of Avifauna of Hong Kong])
- Bird apparently holding territory.
- Courtship, display or anxiety call and agitated behaviour of adult indicating presence of young or nest.
- Adult visiting probable nest-site.
- Nest-building (including excavating nest hole).
- Distraction display or injury-feigning.
- Used nest found.
- Recently fledged young.
- Adult carrying fecal sac or food.
- Adult entering or leaving nest-site in circumstances indicating occupied nest (including colonies).
- Nest with eggs found, or bird sitting but not disturbed, or eggshells found near nest.
- Nest with young or downy young of ducks, gamebirds, waders and other nidifugous species.
For enquiry, please contact Miss Vicky Yeung. Author: HKBWS Vicky Time: 19/04/2011 10:25
One more notice: For observing bird nest, in order not to disclose the nest location, please shorten the observation time and keep in low profile. At the same time, DO NOT remove or disturb the vegetation around the nest. Author: HKBWS Vicky Time: 25/04/2012 11:31
Breeding season has started. You may see birds displaying, building nest around Long Valley. We sincerely hope that when bird watchers and photographer see any breeding behaviour listed above, no matter that species, please record related information and report to us. Thank you so much!!Author: HFCheung Time: 28/06/2012 14:43
There seems to be less species breeding in LV this year. So far the number of species that are breeding is only about half of that is it last year. Is it true that there are less bird breeding, or the breeding behaviors are more difficult to observe this year? Please help.
