About 45 participated in the outing in a rainy day. But the rain do not affect us walking to and back from pond 16/17, which is the only major site of watching for the day. This was an excellent day to study birds in the rain. Also excellent was the chance to observe Black-winged Stilt's breeding behavior. We saw Black-winged drove away Besra and Great Egrets, and both parent provide body rain shelter for their babys. Painted Snipe also shows very well on pond 16/17.
Thanks to Wendy for help leading the outing. We saw 74 species. (We forget to add Besra and Asian Dowitcher in Mai Po.)
Mai Po outing, 22 May 2011, cloudy with isolated rain, S wind grade 4, cool (28 deg)

Never thought rainy day is a good day for bird watching. Birds stayed in ponds for a long time due to bad weather that gave us plenty of time to study and discuss. Special thanks to Allen and his wife for sharing their bird knowledge, though they are not part of the outing group.

Found a bird carcass at the Mai Po car park during yesterday's outing. Who may have an idea what bird it is?

The dead bird photo is clearly a chick. It looks like it is probably a White-shouldered Starling, which are nesting around the Mai Po car park. I think the adults sometimes remove the bodies of chicks which die in the nest, to prevent infection to the surviving chicks. Sadly, it is not unusual for some chicks to die while still in the nest, perhaps especially if the adults are less experieneced. Most broods of starlings seem to fledge all of the chicks, though.
