Bob and I were lucky to witness the best winter's day on the Main Scrape (16/17 ) so far. We got to the scrape around 2.30 and there were already many Pied Avocets, Greenshanks and Redshanks there. They continued to arrive through the afternoon ( I suspect maybe a hovercraft or some disturbence brought them in ). There were probably as many as 5000 birds at the peak around. At one time we had 100 curlew and 15 plus Whimbrel in front of Hide 6. A group of Spotted Redshanks flew by during the harrier scar (a pair ) and there may have been 50 -100. We didn't have time to count or even scan as the action was all around. Here are some images from the day. Neil

I was surprised to see the avocets chase this kite around the sky for some minutes. The kite had something in it's claws but I couldn't make out what it was. I didn't look like an avocet. Neil
It's interesting how the odd heron and egret likes to stand in the middle of the cormorants. For a few weeks it was a little egret in breeding plumage. As if he was hiding his plumes from the others. Neil.
