Temporary Draindown of Gei wai #8

The waterlevel inside gei wai #8 has been lowered and will remain so until 19th February 2007. This is necessary because the Highways Department is fixing a leak under the road at the other end of the gei wai and requested a lower waterlevel. Therefore you are unlikely to see the usual ducks, herons and egrets from the 3-storey Tower Hide.

Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

The waterlevel at gei wai #8 is likely to be low again for at least the next 4-6 weeks. This is necessary to allow volunteers to transplant Reed Grass into the recently excavated area and to give these grasses maximum opportunity to grow successfully.

This work is an essential component of a 5 year research project to investigate avifauna and Reed Grass structure in wet versus dry reedbed habitats. Ultimately this will benefit wildlife and further our management knowledge at Mai Po.

If you would like to know more about the works or the research project please contact Bena Smith - bsmith@wwf.org.hk or 3193 7511.

Sorry if the low waterlevel causes you any inconvenience and we will refill the gei wai as soon as possible.

Gei wai #8 will return to normal operation at the end of May and waterlevels raised back up. The transplanted Reed Grass in the excavated area continues to establish well thanks to the 8 week period of lower water height and warm weather.

Thank you for your patience and we hope you understand the reason for this management.
