Arrangement: The boat will go to Po Toi Island directly OR will spend some time in the south waters to search for seabirds. The group will then have free time on the island (new comers can follow the leader to watch birds on the island) and participants are suggested to have their lunch on the island. The group should be back to the boat around 12:00-1:00 (depends on the leader's decision) and then the boat will stay in the Lamma Channel in the afternoon to look for seabirds and back to Aberdeen at 4:00pm. Please note that this is a brief arrangement and the activity leader will have the right to make the final decision.
Limited to 48 participants only - please return the registration form together with the fare to HKBWS Office for registration.

44 Participants joined the outing today. It was windy and quite rough on the sea, Not many species were seen on the sea but we were welcomed by a group of Finless Porpoises at the start of the day. Highlight was a (or two) Ferruginous Flycatcher seen by many of us.

Two further ticks were the Black-naped Monarch female, still roaming around the graveyard, and one or two Black-faced Buntings heard around the pier.
In regards to the boat trip, the route which was chosen didn't seem really appropriate for sea birds. We were much too close to the shores to see anything like murrelets or shearwaters and turning around Lamma island just brought some nice views of the Sea-Eagle. Wouldn't it be better for the next trips to go out at sea, close to the border with the China waters (south/south west of Po Toi), rather than going west to Lamma? Any suggestion of people with some experience of sea birds would be great.
Thanks! Author: Beetle Time: 26/03/2012 14:19
Thanks for your addition.
The route was chosen according to previous trips and we were in fact quite close to the border during the morning session. Author: wgeoff Time: 26/03/2012 15:30
I think the timing was the problem rather than the route.
I think the best weeks for combined land and sea trips to Po Toi are first and third weeks in April and the first week in May. This trip was two weeks too early.
Having said that, two weeks time is Easter weekend which is probably not easy for many people and if the trip had been one day earlier, a number of people may have seen a probable HK First (Brown-backed Needletail).
Still, I don't think sea trips should be held until April. March is just too early, for both land and seabirds. Author: Ronaldo Time: 26/03/2012 21:04
I did the trips in March (27th), May and June last year (1st and 8th) and the route seemed quite different. I recall going around Lamma island only once in those tours, when we saw the Roseate terns on a floating post (and the tour around Lamma island was uneventful too). However, even then, the boat didn't simply go straight from Po Toi to Lamma and longed the coast for one hour or so.
I just mention the routing this time, as I felt it may not have been adequate, based on a few trips I did before (also outside HK). I understand from Geoff that March is not necessarily the best time for a boat trip, but still got a Kittiwake, last year (at sea). Now if everyone else has experience of sea watching and is happy with the routing, may be the society shall give this route more tries.
