This was our trip last year to Changbaishan area to look for newly hatched broods of Scaly-sided Mergansers along different streams. We observed at least 5 different broods with 4 of them photographed. We would like to thank Vivian Fu, 劉佩琦,朴正吉 for their support and companion.

Thanks Jonathan for your encouragement.
Indeed we are sorry for the delayed posting of these records. During our visit last year, we worried about the increasingly common and uncontrolled gravel-mining of the river bed along different rivers flowing in Changbaishan. The situation, though, was less intense compared to Jiangxi.
One encouraging sighting during our trip was a pair of Harlequin duck staying in the rapid waters. It was spotted by Catherine and confirmed by Mr. Liu Peiqi. Their presence in early summer may suggest trial of breeding in the area.
This year, we received reports of 3 successful nests of the scalys from Changbaishan.

Harlequin is a really pretty bird. I did'nt expect them to breed so far south.
In winter 2009 2010, I've got up to 13 scaly-sided Merganser wintering in Dong Ting Lake in Hunan. I would not be surprised that it is a regular place for them to wintering. It would be interested to follow this site as maybe more birds could occur in this area.
If you're interested on the exact location, just let me know.
All the best,
Jonathan
