Eurasian Tree Sparrow  X

The list above was produced with ebird which I am experimenting with- it seems to be good.  It holds a database of HK's common birds and you submit records.  There is a rarity list too which is accessed by clicking on a tab.  It means your observations are available for all to see.  Is anyone else using it?

A decent list of birds Dylan - gutted to miss Siskin in the valley AGAIN - and even more gutted to be missing Lam Tsuen already . . .

Cheers

Sorry, Mike!  The siskin was in the big hackberry tree beside where the large cobra you photographed was.  Plenty of disturbance of lorries and cars passing underneath, just sat on.  Not the prettiest place to see it, that part of the valley is looking much worse for wear just now.  Hopefully it will green up with the first good rains.

A poor iphone through bino shot.

Having trouble uploading direct to the site- sorry for the link.

Brown Wood Owl

Calling this evening at around 6.45pm, heard from my village.  The usual four note call, a loud huu hu-hu-hu, the last three notes are in rapid succession.

There have been flyover buntings which I believe are Little Bunting and Black-faced Bunting or Chestnut calling but I have been unable to see them conclusively.

Barking deer are also calling just now- a very alarming noise if you don't know what it is.  Even then, it still makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck!

Comments:     I saw a finch/grosbeak which could have been a Hawfinch.  However, I didn't get enough to clinch it.  It was a single bird perched alone at the very top of a tree, perhaps 30 metres away.  Dawn light but fairly bright.  Silhouette was of a dumpy, stocky bird, tail did not appear short- which has me wondering but wasn't long either! I initially thought it was an olive-backed pipit as they have perched in the same tree regularly recently.  Overall colouration was brown on the back, darker wings.  I didn't see any white on the wings or tail.  However, the bill was blue/gray, no yellow.  It flew while I was fumbling for my camera so I missed its wing pattern to.  Very frustrating.  Grosbeaks have been few and far between in Lam Tsuen this winter overall.  Looking back at dates of past occurence of Hawfinch, this ties in with last year.  As I said, I'm not sure but keep a look out!

I saw the pair with other bulbuls in the plains between Tai Che Tei and Sheung Tin Lui Ha. I am not familiar with the names in Lam Tsuen, so base the location on google map.

Thanks, that's where I walk every day and I have never seen them there!  I've seen a lot of chestnut bulbuls out there just this week which is unusual, normally they stick to the forested hillside.  I'll keep a look out.

I saw the bulbuls around 8am. They went from the edge of the forest to the top of the large trees in the open fields. They were very active with some red-whiskered and chinese bulbuls. Good luck!

Geoff- is this too much information?! The list is generated automatically; I can just slim it down to the more unusual birds if that would be easier for you to process.  My records were dominating your spreadsheet a bit!  I can submit all the records at the end of the year rather than on here.

Thanks Dylan

It's not difficult for me to delete common species from your lists - but I think most members would prefer you deleted them from the lists you post, so they only contain 'interesting' species. They then become more readable. Kwan's lists from TPK are a good example to follow.
