AFCD is starting their campaign against House Crows this year as the birds begin to breed in April. The department’s actions at Sham Shui Po have already captured 505 birds and eggs since 2003. Mr WH Lee of AFCD said this would be a long-term engagement, as the birds have higher intelligence than that of 3-year-olds. Various approaches have been used, including baits with a changing “menu” and planting fake eggs at their nests. The next step would be a tailor-made trap.
Dr Lo Wing Lok commented that House Crows have a higher risk of catching H5N1 because of their preference for carrion. Mr Lee explained that all birds and carcass would be tested for the virus, and that 4 positive cases have been found among the 290 samples since last year. Author: BWA Time: 18/08/2007 06:26
