Subject: Red-throated or Red-breasted ?? [Print This Page]

two birds, the first one I am sure is Red-throated flycatcher, but is the second one the same or Red-breasted flycatcher?

Yes, the second bird looks like a Red-breasted Flycatcher.
The bill is less dark with a pale underside nearest to the head. The tones in the plumage are less grey.
But the best distinction between these species is in the call - Red-throated has a harsh and fast rattle, Red-breasted is softer and slower with each note distinct.

Can you tell us where and when these photos were taken please?

Thanks for your reply. Both the two photos were taken in Macau. The first one was taken in Nov 2011 abd the second one was taken in Nov 2013.

would you eventually have a picture showing the uppertail covert of the second bird. It is also a diagnostic feature.

I think the Red-breasted Flycatcher is a first record for Macao. Please can you give the exact date.

This one was taken in NSW on Thursday 19th December 2013. There were 2 birds, one with a red-throat, one without. I only have a photograph of the one with :-(
