Use of geolocators has revealed that a Red-necked Phalarope breeding in the Shetland Islands, Scotland in summer 2012 spent the 2012-13 winter off the coast of Peru in the Pacific Ocean! before returning to Scotland to breed again the following year (RSPB Report).
This migration journey between Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and back again has never been recorded before. It crossed the American continent somewhere in Mexico.
We still have a great deal to learn about bird movements.
