A guy in MaiPo board walk's bird hide kindly told us to pay attention to a Dowitcher, Long-billed he said. It was very far away. How to identify which kind of Dowitcher it is? Sorry for poor photos. It was much better by spot scope.

Some say it looks like a snipe rather than a typical shorebird

Thanks for the reply. Will shy snipe stand and sleep for hours in the open area between HKBWS bird hide at MaiPo boardwalk and Tsim Bei Tsui? We only saw snipes in Long Valley, marsh / wetland but easy to hide. Sorry the snapshot is not clear. But it was quite clear by spot scope, though a bit towards sunlight in early afternoon time. Anyway we shall pay attention next time.

Sometimes there are Common Snipe at the grassy edges of the mangrove near the boardwalk hides.

I don't recall ever seeing a snipe standing in the tidal water among the other waders.  Winter is the "season" for Long-billed Dowitcher.

From the photos I would not be definite about this ID.
