24 participants started at Kwun Tong at 08:00. We went south through the Tathong Channel and around Waglan Island, arriving at Po Toi at about 10:40. Highlights were five species of tern and a rather ragged mystery
murrelet. This was possibly Japanese (Crested) Murrelet, which would be a “First” for HK if accepted. Hopefully, pictures of this much-photographed bird will be posted elsewhere on these bulletin boards.
Three Chinese Goshawks showed well near the Ferry Pier, and a lucky few saw Brown Hawk Owl in the woods.
After picking up four more passengers at the island, from 13:30 we went south towards the edge of HK waters. There were good numbers of terns throughout out the afternoon. We also had views of Streaked and Short-tailed Shearwaters. Distant, dark, hawk-like shapes were identified at first as more Brown Hawk Owls until we came upon one of these birds up close and found it was a Grey Nightjar !
We returned to Aberdeen around 17:30 up the east Lamma Channel. A great day out and a proper “Team Effort”. Thanks to everyone for their good humour and enthusiasm.
