18號基圍生境改善工程
Habitat Enhancement Work at Gei wai #18

本年夏季18號基圍東面部份將進行生境改善工程，基圍東面的一條橫壆將被連接起來，把東面和西面分開。屆時西面靠海一方將灌進海水，東面靠岸一方將收集雨水，改為淡水濕地，作為兩棲類和蜻蜓的棲息地，而其中的蘆葦叢亦會復修為質素較佳的濕蘆葦叢，以供鳥類棲息。

改善工程預計於十月底完成，工程進行期間，若為閣下構成任何不便，本會謹此致歉。如欲查詢進一步資料，請聯絡米埔辦公室，電話：2471-6212。

This summer we are going to convert the landward end of Gei wai #18 into a rain-fed habitat by connecting one of the cross bund at the landward end. The new rain-fed habitat will supplement Pond #19a and #24 in the southern end, serving as habitat for amphibians and dragonflies. Furthermore, wet reedbed will be restored to provide habitat for reedbed dependent birds.

Upon completion of the work at the end of October, the seaward end will be refilled with brackish water and the landward end with rainwater. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause over the coming months. For further information please contact the Mai Po Office at 2471-6212.

米埔南面小徑加高及加固工程
Raising and enforcing footpath at Southern Mai Po

米埔南面的小徑作為行人路之外，亦是將錦繡河的鹹淡水與 #24號塘的淡水分隔開來的主要堤壆。數年前颱風黑格比襲港時造成的湧潮曾一度令錦繡河的鹹淡水沖入淡水塘，可對各種淡水生物做成影響。隨著全球氣候變化，海平面上升，鹹淡水湧入的情況預計將更易發生。因此，本年夏季將對米埔南面的小徑進行加高及加固工程，以緩衝湧潮及海平面上升的影響。

工程於9月26日開始，預計於10月底前完成。工作人員會將泥土運至南面小徑，並用小型挖土機將泥土壓平，隨後小徑上的植物將重新生長。工程期間，小徑將如常開放，惟請各位訪客注意小心車輛出入及路面濕滑不平。若為閣下構成任何不便，本會謹此致歉。如欲查詢進一步資料，請聯絡米埔辦公室，電話：2471-6212。

The southern Mai Po footpathand bund on which it sits, serve as a major barrier between the brackish waterFairview Park channel and the adjacent series of freshwater pond (Pond #24). Afew years back when Typhoon Hagupit swept through Hong Kong, a high tide(>2.8m) in Deep Bay coincided with a storm-induced tidal surge and causedsea water to top the southern Mai Po footpath. Sea water raised salinity in theseries of freshwater ponds which likely had an adverse effect on their freshwaterfauna and flora. Similar phenomenon is predicted to occur more frequently dueto rising sea-level, as a result of human-induced climate change. Thus thissummer, a small project is being undertaken at the Reserve to mitigate againstit.

The project will involve transporting earth to the bundand raising its height by around half a metre. A backhoe will then smooth the surfaceto reinstate the footpath and vegetation allowed to naturally colonize. Thepath will remain open during the work period (26-Sep to 31-Oct) but visitorsare advised to pay high attention to personal safety, especially when walkingon an uneven muddy floor, and vehicles moving along the path.We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause over the coming months.
