I was asked some time back to put up a record of birds seen/photographed by me for the winter period, & have been working on a format that would be useful to others, beyond just naming sightings
The format allows me to keep a rough track of when the birds were sighted at my pond & in what weather conditions together with a photo from that day
I hope this is useful
The highlighted bird name (yellow) refers to the bird pic.... other out of the ordinary bird visits (if any) will be highlighted in a different colour

Despite the bright sunlight our expectations were not realised... was a very slow day whereby there were 2 hours passed without a single bird being seen near or at the pond... livened up as usual as dusk fell... with a fair amount of activity but still not what we had anticipated

A reasonably bright day.
Followed the same trend as the last couple of days..... inundated with Chinese & Red-whiskered Bulbuls & a steady stream of various thrushes, albeit not in great numbers.
Saw the return of a small group of Red-billed Starling, although nowhere near the numbers seen a couple of months ago.
Still nothing new... just the usual species
TAI PENG
Common Buzzard (& a group of 5 a few days ago)
Brown Shrike

Guy

Japanese Thrush - do you mean 5 male and 4 female?
These are good numbers, also of Grey-backed Thrush.

Also five buzzards together is unusual and possibly indicated migrants. What date was this?

Hi Geoff......
Apologies yes... 5 male... typing & eyesight not always in sync... are generally more males than females... will post todays details for a 2.5hr afternoon period later
Thrush numbers are still very slow..... around Xmas had about 200 Thrush visits in one day.
Buzzard group was about 6 days ago I think... was reported by Geoff Smith... he got a pic of one yesterday also
(FYI... on the pics... the rectangular areas represent the periods in which those particular birds arrived)

Spent 2.5 hrs at the pond this afternoon... very overcast & dull light... steady stream of birds... except absolutely zero between 16:00-16:30.... which is becoming a very familiar pattern

A total of 17 Grey-backed Thrush and 21 Japanese Thrush (Guy has confirmed these were all different birds) in one location on one day is a high number.

But it may be representative of many other locations in Hong Kong - not many people sit in one location all day watching the birds like Guy does.

Hi Geoff... sorry, just noticed your comment..... was 38 in one hour (between 16:30 & 17L30)
Best total this year was about 200 in one day
Best one day total was several years ago... over 420... I stopped counting at 17:00 & let them get on with it.... although on those occasions am sure there were return visits
