I think that this is actually a Roseate Tern rather than Common Tern. The bill looks too long/slender for Common, and the outer tail feathers are completely white - Common Tern has a black shaft on the outer tail which is very difficult to see in the field but would be visible on these excellent photos.
I think the confusion for ID arises because of the black bill, but the bill on Roseate Tern is black outside the breeding season - I think the pale tip on this bird may be because the bill is in the process of changing colour.
