As everyone will be aware, the world is going through a very difficult period with the current coronavirus outbreak and Covid-19 disease. Many countries have been forced to impose strict restrictions on movement of people. Many people have already died, and millions of people around the world are forced to stay home to avoid spreading the virus.
In Hong Kong we have been very fortunate to avoid the worst of the outbreak and we do not have such extreme restrictions on movement. But we must not be complacent. The number of cases here is rising, and if the virus gets out of control there is a chance we could be forced into quarantines, as has happened elsewhere.
Given these unusual circumstances, I'd like to urge birdwatchers and photographers to minimise their activities and stay home when possible. We must not ruin our public reputation by being a group that ignores public advice on this issue. Do not go on trips to Po Toi or other hotspots. Do not risk spreading the virus among the population, to your friends or family, or even catching it yourself. Follow government and WHO guidelines for safety, including frequent hand-washing, self-isolation at home where necessary, and wearing a mask when appropriate.
Although we all enjoy birdwatching, we must accept that it is not an essential activity, even during the migration season. Everyone must accept a little inconvenience at the moment to help control this virus.
