[hr]The Lok Ma Chau Spur Line will be open coming Wednesday. While trains with northbound passengers will be running underneath Long Valley, the wetland on the surface will remain a haven for birds. Since end of 2005, HKBWS have been implementing conservation measures with local farmers at this valuable bird area, planting paddy and Chinese Flowering Cabbage (Choi Sum) to attract birds. The Society found that bird numbers have been increasing in the last 2 years, including in particular the first record for Rosy Pipit. The Society expected that the area would remain a good site for birds even with the opening of the Spur Line.

HKBWS Plans to Submit Proposals for 3 Sites
The government have designated 12 high priority sites for strengthened conservation and green groups are allowed to manage some of them. With the second round of applications coming, HF Cheung, Chairman of HKBWS, said the Society have already identified three prospective sites at Luk Keng, Shenzhen River and Tsim Bei Tsui rich in birds and dragonflies for their proposals.
“The site at Luk Keng is a freshwater wetland next to a big egretry. The site at Shenzhen River consists of many fish ponds within the Frontier Closed Area, with habitat resembling Mai Po and favoured by the globally endangered Imperial Eagle. Tsim Bei Tsui is a good site for waders.” Cheung said. After designation of 12 sites of high ecological value, the Government first approved in 2005 two ecological joint management schemes between green groups and land-owners at Long Valley and Fung Yuen. The schemes will expire by November this year.
