Subject: [Oversea] Snipes ID [Print This Page]

All the photos in the following messages were taken in the afternoon of 6 November 2020 in the bird hide of the Futian Mangrove Ecological Park, Shen Zhen.

Snipes ID never bothered me before because I have not seen a snipe that was not a Common Snipe! when I saw the snipe in this message (photo nos. 2475 and 2486), I doubt whether it was a Common Snipe for a reasons I did not sure (may be the shorter bill or the barred pattern of its tail). Later, birders there told me it was a Swinhoe's Snipe (what a jackpot for me!). They had observed this guy for days and examined some photos when it spread its tail feathers and ID it.

However, when I examined my photos taken for the snipes in the location. I found at least three individuals including the one I mentioned. I think the individual (because of the different feather pattern at the shoulder area) in the second message is of the same species (photo nos 2616 and 2684).

But how about the third one in the photos of the third message (photo nos 2563 and 2588) which has some different feather pattern with the two in the first two messages! Is it a bird of same species but different sex?
